Treo vs. Sidekick
I'm trying to decide which phone/organizer combo to get for Christmas. I was planning on a Sidekick at first, a bunch of friends seem to like theirs. But I took a look at the Treo and now I'm torn. The Sidekick is cheaper (free, in fact, with rebates) and has a bigger screen, but the Treo can be backed up to a computer and has a touchscreen phone that makes it much easier to dial than having to flip open the sidekick and use the tiny buttons. Plus I like the fact it uses PalmOs so I can use all those programs.

So anyone want to share their experiences and recommendations?

Samsung i700.

Runs windows for palmtops, can actually interact with Word and Excel reasonably easily. Verizon network is godlike.

Nice looking machine, but ow! The price...

What will this device's primary purpose be? Phone, Web/AIM, email, organizer, or "mobile office"?

The Sidekick is a great data device, because it has a keyboard that you can type fairly rapidly on. Unless you can write very quickly and accurately with the Palm stylus, you will find that you can get data-related things done much more quickly with the Sidekick. But it lacks the Treo's expansion capabilities.

Personally, between my husband's Treo and my Sidekick, I think the Sidekick is a better device for everyday usage -- the occasional phone call, reading and composing short emails, looking up directions and places on the Web, etc. And for those kinds of applications, the vastly lower price of the Sidekick seems much more worthwhile.

Probably about equal purpose phone and organizer. There'll definitely be some web and email, but more checking than composing. The Treo definitely seems better as phone, and since my cell is my only phone that's important, but I also don't spend hours on the phone; I have two or three fairly short calls most days. And there'd be some reading of books and gameplaying for killing time, which is a frequent use of my Palm :)

I don't know which Treo tavella is lusting after, but my 600 has a keyboard, and no graffiti area.

Do you find the keyboard usable? I find using it torture, whereas I can type pretty rapidly on my Sidekick.

Eh, it's usable, but I usually have the laptop with me and use that for entry instead. The Palm's more of a read-only thing. (I should note that I'm using it only as a Palm right now, not as a phone or wireless access ssh gadget.) I haven't used a Sidekick so can't compare.

I've never had a Treo, but I've had 3 Palms and a Handspring, and each one of them crapped out on me after about a year of constant usage. In September, I bought the Sidekick 2, and have absolutely no complaints. It is excellent for all the reasons evilhat stated, and I would highly recommend it.
