thoughts while fiddling with my mp3 player
My sorting and cleaning up of my mp3 files is being severely hampered by the The problem. Apparently some smarter software just ignores the The, but Creative's is too dumb. So I have to decide how I want to do names -- "The Name", "Name, The", or just Name. And if I use the The, I have to decide who gets one. Is it The Beatles, or the Beatles? It started as The Beatles, but these days you usually see it as the Beatles in casual use. So many choices! Argh!

Also, I was listening to Billy Joel's "They Didn't Start the Fire" and had the vaguely horrifying realization that the earlier events in the song are farther away from today than World War One was from my birth. Yes, I felt old.

And even better, what do you do when you have six albums by The The?

I ended up...
... letting Creative have its way. Bruce Springsteen is a B and The Beatles are in my long list of The bands. CDDB provides band/singer names that way, and I didn't really feel like renaming everything on my player. This is in contrast to my books of CDs, which are carefully alphabetized by the last name of the singer and the first word of the group name, excluding The.

I almost always play tracks randomly anyway...
