I have really, really missed working in a tech environment. Late on a Friday afternoon, we are amusing ourselves while waiting for the results of load testing runs by constructing paper airplanes of various designs and flying them across the office (and nearly out into the main library floor on occasion.) Our uberboss wanders out of the adjoining area, we attempt to look innocent. He just says "Don't get arrested." and wanders back in.

This afternoon, while I was supposed to be entering RFCs into the budget, I temporarily found myself ensnared in trying to get my rubber-band guitar tuned properly. So I was sitting there, pile of paper in front of me, half turned in my seat so I could fiddle with the pushpins, tuning the rubber bands higher or lower, and my boss not three feet away was just sitting there cracking up.

Of course, about half an hour earlier the following conversation had occurred:

Boss: Oh, he's at it again!
Me: Who is what?
Boss: My friend who I'm talking to on AIM. I was concentrating on something else and not responding to him, so he wrote "I feel rejected. And dejected. And subjected. And possibly objected. But not projected." And I just don't know what to say to that!
Me: Tell him you're inspired. Possibly even wired. But you hope you won't be fired, because then you'll be retired.
Boss: I'll do that!

My boss is great.

We use a paper airplane in our interview process. We do group interviews to give people an idea of what we do and who we are, and to expose them to as many of us as we can.

At the end the have to make a paper airplane and then sell the airplane as why it's the best one in the group. This works with Techies and Sales people. It does NOT work with Admins.

I think we all agreed Dana's was the best. Though it was sort of cheating because it involved cutting and taping. But it had engine loops!

And I had to pick today to feel sick...

It was amusing! We lost two of the planes behind Julian's cubicle wall, though.
