Edith
When I was very small I spent the week before Christmas at their house, because my mother was having my brother, and we strung popcorn and cranberry strands together.

When I was a little older, we spent our weeks at the beach together, and named crabs as they scrambled all over the kitchen floor, and built sandcastles, and brought silly dolls at the arcade on the boardwalk.

When I was older still, we sat on the patio after parties, drinking wine and joking that she and my brother would be each others' second spouses.

And now she's on life support, because some 80 year old who probably shouldn't have had an license hit the accelerator instead of the brake and smashed into her. Tomorrow they'll turn off the machines, and the transplant surgeons will take what they can.
