We had gaming last night, the second game in Tony's new heroic templates campaign. It definitely makes playing a sorcerer more fun. I'm a half-dragon, with some mods to make it a little less overwhelming (no six die breath weapon at first level.) I haven't played a sorcerer or wizard type since adolescence, because they are just too annoying at first level -- fire off your handful of spells and then hide. Sorcerers have even fewer spells, of course, my first level suite being Shield and Magic Missile. So my gameplan tends to be, cast Shield and bite/claw/claw. The half dragon part makes her a quite effective fighter, even though she has less hit points than the rest of the party.
The game mostly consisted of clearing orcs and goblins out of the dungeon level. It's been so long since I started a new character at first level; orcs are actually scary! They can kill any of us but the half-troll with a single blow. The goblins proved less difficult. They could hurt us with numbers and coordination, but they couldn't roll for shit last night, so we cleared them right up with enough ease that we even felt confident enough to let the leader-type (who had surrendered) go after questioning.
