new campaign!
First game of Balazar last night, and it was great fun. We are hunter-gathers on the fringes of the Lunar Empire. Bernie is a shaman, I'm the hearthmother, yessod's a hunter, Dave is a curious hunter, diony is a spirtual hunter and space_parasite is a dog -- in Balazar some of the dogs have human intelligence and speech. It was mainly a character generation session, but we also ran a couple of practice combats, in which we learned Rule One: we are fuckin' fragile. It's hard to get an arm hit that doesn't break your arm. For our second combat we went hunting for antelope, and the end result was 3 dead antelope, two broken arms, one broken leg, and one gored dog. I have vowed that my next course of study is going to be another level of healing, as right now I can only heal and stop bleeding and I clearly Really Need to be able to heal broken bones.

But it was delightful, it's a long time since I played a game where such mundane considerations as whether it was a winter hunt (and thus we could go after more antelope without waste, as we could freeze and cache the rest) came into play. It reminds me of the brief beloved successor campaign to Freeport, where we were colonists building a new civilization out of scratch. In the hands of a good GM, such things as livestock auctions can be great RP.

And it's not a slow moving system, despite our modest status. eyelessgame is using D20 mechanics for the most part, but keeping the original advancement system, which strongly rewards using your skills. I gained a point in power already, and while power is the most volatile of the stats, it looks like the other most used skills will advance pretty quickly as well.

Yeah, but it was very nice of you anyway! I wasn't sure if the permanent game was going to be on Wednesdays, but it is now, so I won't be at Red Dwarf except when it's not running. Which sucks, because it means that once again I will have seen the first few seasons and not the last few. Wah.
